Reflection: 6/7/11

Reflection
What film studies are being reviewed and practiced? What new skills have been introduced?

Today was entirely devoted to project, which is incredibly rushed and will likely be failed or pummeled in grades by everyone involved. Some new skills were forced to develop were that of making soundscape through the use of specialized objects to simulate various soundscapes such as rain and wind ambiance. Things like river flowing sounds had use the tap. Also, to make some specialized effects that were particularly difficult to extract such as an underwater sound, I learned to use sound filters in Final Cut Pro to derive the sound from existing effects, like the river flowing effect. Basically, what had to be done was to change the frequency and volume, so that a more echo and deep bass sound of water occurred which seemed as if underwater. Other ordinary skills reviewed was simply using microphones to record sounds, though it was slightly more complicated because we used video to capture the sound and had to extract the sound from the video. Other skills were basic editing in Final Cut.
Evaluation
How successful was I in achieving my goals and why? How could I/my group make use of our time more effectively?

We managed to record all necessary soundscapes however we have not verified the viability of each clip, which means we don't yet know if we have to re-record any of the sounds. We were also about to record the melodies, the music to reflect the mood of the comic, but because there was not enough time left in class, we could not even start which meant we had to come back over and over at lunch to finish the soundtrack and record the music next class. Therefore, we did not do well at achieving our goals today because we are no where close to actually finishing the soundtrack. We made use of our time extremely well anyway and even that wasn't enough to do it. We need more time but there isn't so we have to come back at lunch times and use all of next class to continue recording.

Reflection
What knowledge is being reviewed?

Today, we tried to continue with the soundtrack unit, primarily through the completion of the storyboard, which did not occur because instead, we were to watch the music videos of our former unit. This is where most of the knowledge was reviewed from. Each video was presented with a talk from the group of made it.
Beatrice's Group:
-fairly traditional Bollywood music video - cheesy love story and group choreographed dancing
-poor prop work - seen on camera
-poor choreography - on-the-spot and unprepared
-variety of camera effects - tracking, long shots etc. - used to convey story though lack of expression
Davis' Group:
-fairly traditional Canto-pop music video - cheesy rejection story
-Unclear story in favor of symbolism - albeit lacking the symbol or clarity required in a music video
-good editing - using colors and slow motion to convey mood and story
Generally, effects and the camera work were used to convey the expressions of the story and message.
What feedback did I receive today?
In the comments on the music video, we were told that our filming of action and story was very clear and concise, and because it matched the song well, we told our music video was generally very good. It was especially noted that we filmed the action was very good as it very much enhanced the base and intensity of the music whole action-ridden basketball music video of competition. The story was also noted because of its clarity and very linear progression. However, some improvements that were suggested was making the training session part shorter because it basically dominated the middle half but became tiresome because it consisted of shot after shot and although it shown improvement of the character's skill, it was too long and repetitious.
Evaluation
How did I interact in class/group today?

In terms of the class, I watched all the music videos all the music and took down some notes in the form of feedback for myself so that I could use it for my own future films. I also asked a few questions to get more intention and ideas for each of the music videos to ensure better understanding of intention. In terms of a group, I with my music video creation group presented our speech on the music video, explaining our intentions and techniques in order to convey action, story and expression.
What will I do in response to feedback given?
I will continue to uphold the camera work which was noted to be very good and matched the action and story very well, especially the dutch-shot that while did not hold any meaning, was well-placed in the action sequences. I will also ensure that there are more changes in scenery. While the story was good, the training was too long and repetitious which I will try to make less and instead add more changes so that it is not.

Reflection
What new knowledge has been introduced?
Today is the start of the new unit - to make a soundtrack for comics. The knowledge introduced as part of this unit was that instead of using a computer based program to make the soundtrack which would be too easy, we needed to make them ourselves as most film makers did. This was fairly difficult because it meant we had to do custom research to find out how to gather the necessary sounds required that would fit the stimulus we had to make a soundtrack for - the comic book. We also learned that this was how film makers did it, the used stimulus as a base to synthesize sounds for. Through this, the process would be more of a self-guided track where we had to do it ourselves.
What film studies skills are being reviewed and practiced? What new skills have been introduced?
To better guide this process, it was decided in our group that in order to plan out what sounds had to be gathered and researched in order to find how to collect them, the skill of storyboarding was reviewed practiced, albeit a modified version because it had nothing to do with planning out shots, lengths and positions. Rather, we used the storyboard to organized the comic book panels and list out sound effects required for each panel. Through this, we would know what we needed and what ordered we needed it in. Thus, it would help us in the collection of tracks and help us better coordinate the soundtrack with the comic. This is also a new skill because it introduced a secondary application of storyboarding.
Evaluation
How successful was I at achieving my goals today and why? How could I/my group make use of time more effectively?
Our goal was to ensure we planned out our entire soundtrack through the storyboarding. However, due to confusion at the start and initial thoughts that we were actually to use software to make the soundtrack, we weren't able to get far in the storyboard, only able to create about a page after some discussion to find a good method. Half of our group was missing today due the geography trip, but had they been here, we could have made better use of our time through having some people research how to make the selected sounds, have someone making the documentary as part of the criteria A assessment to ensure that 2 things can be completed in one set of time. In addition, the storyboard will be continued.

Did I solve any problems today? How? What didn't I understand or find difficult today? What can I do about this?

While we had finalized the music video last class, we still faced some minor pre-export problems. These problems were namely the audio equalization and, though unnecessary and unofficial, video hosting. The first, before we could export it as a finalized edition, had to be solved. The audio of the song greatly overpowered intro and concluding audio as part of clips in those areas. In order to ensure good quality, all audio has to be equalized. The problem was we didn't know how to do it. We explored the program and asked Ms.Wong, who told us about the audio edit area where we minimized the scale of volume which then equalized the audio, after which we exported it. This solving of this problem taught me a new mode of editing and skill in final cut pro. At the same time we wanted to upload it to facebook but the original export was too large. Therefore, I went online and learned of the export options available where I tweaked the quality and size to be lower allowing for internet streaming. While not technically a film skill, I did learn a new skill which could be useful in the future.
How can I further develop the skill I am learning?
As evidenced by today's lesson as well as previous ones, it is obvious my skill in video editing in final cut pro are lacking. There is therefore a need to improve that, especially since I will continue to work in film. In order to that, I must practice with the program to familiarize myself with existing tools which will also consolidate my comfortability with the program. Then, in order to learn new functions, I will have to research them and explore the program, just go random and learn what various things are like so, but if I don't understand it regardless, then I will research it.
Evaluation
What did I really enjoy today? Why?

While this lesson was so much a fulfilling lesson because we finished, I did enjoy the fact that we had finished due to the sense of accomplishment. I also enjoyed the fact that we were the only group to actually finish on the due date.

Reflection
Did I solve any problems today? How? What didn't I understand or find difficult today? What can I do about this?
Because some of the clips were of inadequate quality, we decided to film just a bit more a little. We needed to get a few filler clips for the song, basically the lip syncing and a victory thrust to show the protagonist's achievements. The problem was Nic's enthusiasm in singing, because he couldn't dance and was not very lively, so for one clip, we taught him basic dance moves for which he used. The end result was one excellent lip synced singing scene. This was the biggest problem solved. During the editing, I found adding bloopers difficult because of the lack of experience with tools. Despite being relatively inexperienced with the complex video editing platform, with Alastair the "Editor in Chief", we managed with to learn that in order to add bloopers, it wasn't a matter of finding templates where bloopers could be dragged in, rather, it involved shrinking the credits so that there would be space on the side where video clips could be added. After adding this and finalizing it, the music video was deemed officially finished.
What film skills have been reviewed today? What new skills have been introduced?
Given the two main tasks today, the filming and editing, the skills practiced were general filming techniques and general editing techniques. Both were obviously employed to finish the music video, officially. The new skill learned today was the addition of bloopers in the use of final cut pro. As described in the previous question, this new skill, while isn't vital is a good skill to have because many videos or movies tend to have bloopers. This also enhances my editing skill particularly in the credits area.
Evaluation
How successful was I in achieving my goals today and why? How could I/my group make use of time more effectively?
Because this was one of the last classes before the Criteria B due date, our main goal was to complete the music video so that it could be submitted on time, while our secondary goal was to fix up some inadequate parts of the music video such as Nic Tse's lack of dance skill in the clips. Given the fact we managed to finish the music video with the final filming and editing of the music video so that we could hand it in on time, I'd say we were incredibly successful in our goals today. Due to this, we were well on track and judging by other groups, we were ahead. We worked incredibly efficiently today which was one of the key reasons as to why we were able to complete our goals, which means our time management especially with the task division was incredibly good. I still, believe though, that better concentration in clip recording could have helped due to some distractions.

Reflection
What knowledge is being reviewed? What new knowledge has been introduced?

With the final wave of the music video presentations, the same common knowledge was reviewed one final time. The general descriptions, meanings and uses of the various camera techniques, colors and lighting and the unique and common characteristics of music videos. Some of the new pieces of knowledge I learned originated with Bryce's presentation, whose chosen music video was somewhat unique to normal ones discussed by other students. Instead of common footage, most was flashing lights and if there were footage, it tended to be black and white. Bryce's explanation of the use of lights explaining how the light's contributed to repetition and randomness, as well as how, in addition to the black and white footage, told the story of how something small appeared in the big city. While not ideal, the lights effect in editing can be used to make out a sense of whimsicality. The black and white filter also allows films to be almost a memory, as if recalling sadness or importance.
What film studies skills are being reviewed and practiced?
After the presentations, we continued to work on the music video. Because we needed extra footage due to the inadequacy and qualitative lack, we proceeded to collect the replacement footage required. However, instead of using complex camera techniques, we made static shots to accommodate our group member's setback on dancing skill. Aside from generalized filming, we also practiced editing, finally starting the process. In accordance to characteristics of music videos described as part of presentations and personal research, we crafted the storyline with conceptual clips, and predominantly used short cuts to enhance dynamics of the music.
Evaluation
How successful was I in achieving my goals today and why? How could I/my group make use of time more effectively?

We successfully collected adequate footage and made a fairly good start on the editing of the music video. Even though we did not go very far in part due to the use of splinter cells and the last of the music video presentations, we managed to get on track, entering the final stages of this project. My group and I made excellent use of our time. The splinter cell tactic did inhibit progress a bit because in the case of editing, it is best if there were a team, however, we managed to partition tasks which meant we were able to complete multiple tasks. It would be better if we could be more efficient in the way we make less screw ups particular in filming.
How did I interact in class/group today?
In the entire class, I acted as feedback personnel. To the following members, I gave the following comments:
  • Dean - Good analysis, more reading less talking, lack of terminology (most areas), somewhat vague, very descriptive
  • Anne: Colors well explained, more talking less reading, explained relevance, rambled a bit
  • Bryce: Somewhat unsure, slow speech and rambled a bit, good analysis of music video editing
  • Davis: Lack of visual presentation, more lecture, formal, good analysis, more reading less talking.
In group, I acted as the cameraman in filming. I mainly coordinated things on sight while my classmates acted out their roles as characters. I also briefly helped in editing, organizing the overall style and jump-starting the actual editing, putting together some of the first clips.

Reflection: 4/4/11

Reflection
What knowledge has been reviewed? What new knowledge has been introduced?

Once again, through several presentations, general knowledge of music videos was once again reviewed. General camera techniques and distances, color and lighting effects as well as editing styles were once again looked over in these presentations because music videos tend to share similar traits in these areas. Some of the new pieces of knowledge that came to light was the method silhouetting as mentioned by Katherine in her presentation. In terms of film, the act of placing a powerful light behind a person makes it difficult to visualize the front of the subject and thus, looks dark and in contrast with the light allows only a silhouette of the subject to be seen. This allows for mysterious looks and emphasizes motion performed by the subject as that is the only practical thing that can be seen. Katherine's presentation also emphasized the use of hidden message and how certain movements provided the audience with little hidden messages. Silhouetting can be used in a dark setting, especially in our own films to create a sort of mysterious, awe-struck setting.
Did I solve any problems today? How? What didn't I understand or find difficult today? What can I do about this?
Because of the time pressure to finish the music video established due to lag in presentation and lack of class time to work on our projects, we had to rush to collect all footage required for our music video. We to rush it and collect all footage required. There were two areas I found difficult today. The first involved my own presentation of music videos. While I found it easy to stand up and talk to the audience without looking much at the notes or the computer unless I needed to refer directly to it, I found it difficult to actually present. By this, I mean maintain the formality as needed in the presentation of knowledge. I suspect this to because of general spur-of-the-moment thinking and lack of practice, which means I will have to rehearse more. The second is the concept of lip-syncing in a music video. Nic Tse was our "singer" but it was difficult to get it done to due the pace of the words recited in Chinese. Therefore, we found that create a general mouth shape was sufficient, or simply just to make it look like we were saying it right but were really just random mouthings with only true mouthings for identifiable words.
Evaluation
How successful was I in achieving my goals today and why? How could I/my group make use of time more effectively?

There are two parts. The first is the presentation. My goals were to use as little of the notes as possible which means more eye-contact, and be informative. I was good at looking at the audience though I occasionally looked at the screen to quote or to read out which is not always good but in some places useful. I was quite informative, breaking down my presentation notes and explaining it to the audience. Thus, I believe in this aspect I was quite successful. The second act is the final filming. This was to get footage required to edit though we might need reshoots later. Much of it was not well done because, not to offend, Nic Tse's lack of ability to dance though his singing was moderately good. It therefore seemed very amateurish. Despite this and several takes, we managed to get what we needed albeit at a somewhat lower quality than desired. Thus, the success here is not so great. We should spend more time on it outside school to get more and rehearse more, but also utilize all time available to us to get this done.

Reflection: 3/29/11

Reflection
What new knowledge was introduced?

Much of the content was a rehash of other people's information as well as what had already been researched. One of the new pieces of information that came to light was the jump shot, which is a cut to a similar scene, usually in background though there will be differences. While editing is fairly basic, the specificity of a name for specific transition shows that there is diversity not yet explored and should be. Another pieces of information was the specific difference between zooming and tracking. In a zooming scenario, the audience should be static while the subject does move. Tracking is vice versa, where it seems to be us moving through the camera while the subject remains static. All this allows us to better analyze footage when need be and apply the different techniques with greater certainty about what we're doing is correct.
Evaluation
How did I interact in class/group today?

Same as last class, I continued to evaluate people's presentation's content and character. Today's were better than last class, and presentations had more depth and analysis than last time. For example, Nicholas' Sung's presentation consisted unnecessary showing of the selected music video, followed by an aspect by aspect presentation that closely followed the music video, represented by screen shots. His content was reasonably good. However, I observed that many people did not use much subject specific terminology, especially in editing and lighting aspects.

Reflection: 3/25/11

Reflection
What knowledge is being reviewed? What new knowledge has been introduced?

Today was involved less than half the class presenting their Music Video presentations regarding a selected representative music video used to explore film-related techniques used to make them. The knowledge reviewed and in some places, introduced, was the camera techniques, editing techniques, colors and lighting of general films and how they are used to create a music video's effects, storyline and message throughout. Much of this knowledge had been taught by Ms.Wong prior and researched by many of us for our own music videos as well as a requirement for the making of our own music videos. Things like medium shots, incident lighting, color meanings, or panning and tilting were crucial in the exploration in music videos and the effects they created were subsequently reviewed. Some new knowledge introduced were, for instance specific meanings of certain colors such as blue or green. For example, when used as lighting in a dark scenario, it makes the scene look immediately ominous, as used in Michael Jackson's thriller. Much of this knowledge helps consolidate our understanding while simultaneously assisting us in the creation of our own music videos, as this knowledge could be used to further enhance our own videos.
Evaluation
How did I interact with my class/group today?

For each presentation, I took jot down some basic feedback and comments about their general presentation and information inclusion. I found that many people lacked sufficient depth in their exploration into their music video. Most people only saw the basics and talked about how they worked in their own music videos, ignoring the requirement to talk about how those aspects affect music videos in general. Also, there was a noticeable lack of multiple aspects in a given group, such as camera techniques. Some were incorrectly identified, and only did one or two when there was, in reality, many more that should and could have been observed and explained. I also noticed that many people's presentation's were short, and the only reason they appeared to be long was because they unnecessarily showed their music video which took up the bulk of their time while it could have been substituted by images or short cuts. All this means that many people were not working hard enough or aren't very observant.
How can I improve my knowledge?

Since most people's knowledge area were, in my view, somewhat inadequate, I should ensure that I know much more. Even though I have already extensively traversed my music video multiple times and examined the internet for sub-specific terminology and meanings, I should consolidate my knowledge further to ensure I retain the maximum amount of information while further improve my knowledge. This can be done my looking over my notes, presentation and further researching into the subject of music videos.

Reflection
What film studies skills are being reviewed and practiced? What new skills were introduced?

We started shooting following the storyboard. Using the storyboard and script, we recorded clips needed for our film. Because Bryce, one of our main actors did not show up, we persisted in filming parts not requiring him. Despite this, we made some progress on the overall recording. Aside from the basic shooting, we also utilized some of the music video characteristics such as shakiness of the camera as a sort of intense amplifier. This introduced a new concept and area in our line of recording. Most clips tend to be stable shots using classic camera movements, however, music videos are more lax and have a somewhat less formal and therefore slightly more random style of recording making a genre of its own. This is one of the new things learned practically in this unit.
Did I solve any problems today? How?
As Bryce was not present, we could not film much of the major areas such as the storyline which required all of the 3 actors. Lacking him, we proceeded to record areas not requiring him such as the singing areas and other non-canon clips not in any immediate need for Bryce. Therefore, an overview would be the problem was a lack of an important member and solution was recording areas that did not require the important member.
Evaluation
How successful was I in achieving my goals today and why? How could I / my group make use of time more effectively?

Even though we didn't get through as much as we would have liked, we did make progress despite the set backs faced today. Therefore, we were moderately successful at achieving the goals set. Progress was slow as some clips required multiple takes to get suitable clips. To make better use of our time, we should have taken more scenes rather than focus on correcting one scene until perfection. This is because we could have gotten good material, and edit out the bad areas. We could have also re-shot after we need be. Another way would be to get most of the easy areas finished first instead of doing relatively new experience clips like the lip syncing which was quite tedious to do.
What did I really enjoy today? Why?
I enjoyed the new experience of recording a music video as it provided a challenge, was a new style of recording, and fun to watch people fail. The challenge was the repetitious attempts to get good shots to accommodate our needs and requirements. Te new style of recording presented the sense of discovery that is particularly effective in learning because it triggers extensive thinking which is reasonably fun. The watching people fail is just funny because the way people screw is often humorous.

Reflection
What film studies skills are being reviewed and practiced?

Continuing on from last class, we finished taking the pictures required for the storyboard. The primary skills that were used wasn't specifically the picture taking, but rather the following of the script and the creation of shots based on camera techniques appropriate for the moment identified in said script. For various moments, we used a variety of camera distances and angles that seemed most appropriate for the moment. For example, when shooting the basketball into the hoop, we use a medium shot and low angle so the shooter and the ball entering the hoop would be present while simultaneously making the successful shooter seem more important. The second skill is storyboarding, which we all came back and started after uploading all photos to each other and dividing the script and assigning each person a section. Using the shots, we created a visual representation of what the shot in the actual music is supposed to look like, while specifically identifying key features such as the action, dialogue, camera angles and camera distances for each shot.
Evaluation
How successful was I in achieving my goals today and why? How I / my group make use of time more effectively?

Since we were able to take all the pictures, upload them and start doing the storyboards in a fairly organized fashion, this class's goal was achieved. However, during the picturing time, many of us played with the basketball and tended to go off track and if this didn't happen, we could have finished at least 15 minutes early as opposed to the hour we took to complete everything. We might have even been able to take more pictures. Therefore, the best way to eliminate this is focus on task like professionals. It is obviously near impossible not to be distracted but if we could at least focus a bit more, time could be better spent.

Reflection: 3/11/11

Reflection
What film studies are being reviewed and practiced?
Following the completion of the script, we started to take pictures for the storyboard. While we didn't finish photographing, we did take an excess of pictures needed for the specific parts we were taking pictures of. This time's storyboarding was a bit different. Last time was simply taking basic pictures for our storyboard however this time it involved a more complex capture to suit a specific genre. Music videos tend to be more dynamic then the previous basic home setting that my previous group was working with. This change forced us to take more pictures than needed in order to capture as much of the dynamics and action as possible, and coupled with the new areas like basketball playing and singing, it was harder to capture it. I also found that a great many more different types of shots were required. Unlike last time where there was a basic home setting, there had to be long shots to capture the setting, low angle shots, and high angle shots to put emphasis on the basketball nets, the people and the action, which is definite change to the previous.
Did I solve any problems today? How?
Some of the problems encountered today were the collection of photos with the script and the use of newer and more complex angles to capture the action in the script.Lots of the shots required for the script were different and more complex and therefore had to be improvised a bit. Since we were inexperienced in this area, we took more shots than needed in order to ensure we got everything right. Also, at the beginning when finishing the script, we had to make the film more descriptive so what we did is add more descriptions and accurate representations that fit the gaps thereby making our script complex.
Evaluation
How can I improve my knowledge? How can I improve my skills?
In order to further my knowledge of music videos, I obviously have to continue and expand on my research to do with music videos and further look into different cultures. Also, I could watch a lot more and gather subconscious traits of the music videos. To improve the photography skills for the shots of the storyboard, I should practice and familiarize myself with the different shots.
What did I really enjoy in class today? Why?
I really enjoyed taking the pictures because it allowed us to move forward with our process and it allowed us to experiment with a few new shots an genres.

Reflection: 3/9/11

Reflection
Following the selection of the music video genre and AOI, all that was left to choose the song and start building towards the film. When we initially selected a song, we found it unsuitable for an AOI. We attempted to adapt it to the AOI by finding a meaning that could link it to Health and Social Education which was pointed out to be wrong because the film we are making is designed to promote and explore the AOI. Trying to forcibly alter the meaning of the song so that it will fit the AOI doesn't work like that so we looked out for another song that allowed to us to what the former failed. We started and looked into the script writing for the film as a basic outline of the film would encompass, and from there on the story was created providing us with details that would allow us to progress into the storyboard phase next class. However, this experience was different to the other because unlike creating our own story and lines, we had to adapt the scene to the song which allows us to learn about that form of film while simultaneously learning to adapt to changes rather than always freely doing what we want because things don't work like that.
Evaluation
Within this 80 minute class, we were a bit distracted looking for songs, rapidly discussing but not doing anything really productive in that time. However, in the middle of those enthusiastic discussions, we managed to get somewhere, selecting the song and even starting and finishing the first draft of the script meaning our class was quite successful. We could have worked better by focusing more on the task at hand, and assuming could we may have been able to start the storyboard but the current progress is actually reasonably good because relative to other groups, we worked hard and are now a bit ahead.

Reflection: 3/3/11

Reflection
Today, there was not much going on but rather a continuation of the previous lesson as well as the subtle beginning of the next topic following the completion of the warm up film. The goal is to make a music video, thus my new group and I continued to explore the dimensions of what music videos were made up of, namely their camera techniques, angles, video effects, cuts etc. Also, in order to gain a wide variety of culture surrounding various country music video styles, we explored several culture's music videos. It was found that in every single type of culture, there were unique properties that made that country's style unique to another, however, there were always similar elements that made the music videos a unique genre as well. For example, Western music videos tend to flashy and had rapid-transitions between short cuts of film. Japanese ones tended to focus extensively on the band and had longer shots that tend to move around the band in, focusing on them from below. In order to garner accurate representations of a music video, keen observations were made to collect data not only on the uniqueness of each culture, but the classical key concepts of the genre, such as a progressive story that intertwined with the band or singer singing or the singer or band performing the song.
Evaluation
Though we were all working to find information, the group splintered in order to collect information for themselves on their own blog. However, while this method emphasized independence, it allowed all of us to understand deeply about the various aspects of a music video, which could not be simply found listed on the internet. Instead, it had to sampled and noted down from music videos that were watched on YouTube. Despite this splintering, it is vital that we all collect and share this information as we will have to work together later to pool all information together and utilize it in the actual making if the music video.
Outside of the classroom, I have to continue to research the music videos to further increase and deepen the pool of information, as it will be vital and essential for the future. In order to further increase my knowledge, I must also diversify the cultures of music videos in order to collect more unique techniques.

Cultural Music Video Characteristics

Aside form the normal characteristics of a modern music video listed in the previous music video post, each culture or country has its own style of music video, however these music videos tend to emulate their country's own style of ordinary film. Some of the unique characteristics of several different cultural music videos are listed below:

  • Western / American Music Videos: Short cuts of film and quick transitions, moving focus (eg. when a clip transitions in, it starts somewhere else, then focuses on the singer.) Western music videos also tend to use extensive video effects such as brightness, saturation and slow motion to make the music videos more dynamic. Also, the camera tends not to be stable in places, but instead shaky in order to create the effect of constant movement and excitement.

  • Japanese Music Videos: Longer cuts, tends to have still focus on singers, slower moving focus of overall band, tends to focus a medium shot on singer, usually has overall focus on the band itself. Also, Japanese Music Videos puts a lot more focus onto the singers rather than the story itself, as the point of music videos is to advertise the song.

  • Chinese Music Videos: Unlike other music videos, the story and the performance of the song is very well immersed together. Though it really isn't an aspect, they also tend to have the subtitles of the song as if it were a karaoke. Besides that, there also tends to be a lot of action in Chinese music videos. Similar to Japanese ones, Chinese music videos put a lot of focus on to the singer. The camera angles and techniques also tend to mimic the action, such that if the song is in a calm phase there the camera will be still, but at a fast paced area, the camera will be shaky and in some places effects such as slow motion will be used to emphasize the action.

What new knowledge has been introduced?

Following the completion of the AOI Health and Social Education or "warm up" film, we started to research music videos. In our research, we discovered key features of music videos, and some of the contrasts between music videos of different languages and cultures. All this however can be seen on the blog.
What feedback did I receive today?
Today was the finishing date so at the end, all videos were played back to us. For our video in particular, I evaluated my own video and gathered feedback. It was generally okay, however we were still missing a few parts and forgot to cut out the "action" bit out of one of the clips. Consistency was somewhat of an issue because the beginning change to a new setting was not only obvious to us, but to people if they knew nothing about our school. The lighting was a dim which downgraded the quality of our film. Also, there was a lack of music relative to other films which means that ours didn't have very much of a clear feeling, only a somewhat ambiguous one. The good thing was that the storyline was reasonably intact and there were suitable titles and credits.
Evaluation
What have I learned from the feedback?

I learned that in order to make an adequately good film, one must take into account a lot of features of a film such as lighting and camera angles, which requires a lot more time than the time we were given. Also, during the editing phase, it is not only important to look back at the script to ensure that everything is in place but to also watch the film over before exporting to ensure that everything was fine. Music is also a good element to add as it creates a mood. Even our film could have been enhanced with a bit of mood music.

Notes on Music Videos

What are music videos? Music Videos are basically short video clips that accompany a piece of music. Music Videos are currently very popular with the modern music industry, but are only somewhat used in the classical section. Music Videos comprise of several key aspects:
  • Consistency is not an issue - In many modern music videos, scenes tend to switch places that are meant to carry on from each other, however, in each there are obvious differences. For example, in the former scene, the subject may be bound by ropes, then suddenly, the next scene may depict him in a free state singing the song.
  • A Story - Usually in modern music videos, the ones that follow modern rock music, there is usually story of some sort that follows the theme of the music. If the music is about love, then the story tends to be a love story.
  • Singer singing - The music artist / singer is usually present in the music video, lip syncing to make them appear to me actively singing the song though the music is obviously pre-recorded.
  • Scene Switching - Music videos constantly switch between the story at hand, and the singer lip syncing with song.
  • Quick Switches - Because music videos tend to be dynamic in way, scenes tend to switch very quickly, usually in time with the music's pulse.
  • Slowing Down and Speeding Up - Many music videos tend to slow down or speed up some of their scenes to create a dramatic or rushed effect, respectively, usually to enhance the "feel" of the music
  • Focus on instrumentals and Singer - During the areas where it depicts the singer "singing" or where the music enters a purely instrumental phase, the camera usually use a series of close up shots to focus in on the singer or the instrument played, respectively.
  • Progressive Story - Story's usually follow the tone of the music and the short story starts small and progresses with the music's dynamics, and they end at the end of the music, following the music itself.
The above are general features that are encompassed within all videos. However, different language and culture music videos would probably have some differences unique to that style. For example:
  • Chinese Music Videos - These tend to have karaoke lyrics at the bottom of the screen that follow the song.
  • Spanish Music Videos - The Spanish variety tends to focus more on the singer as a character as part of the story or singing separately, though they also focus on the story also, just less so.
  • Japanese Music Videos - They sometimes include lyrics similar to the Chinese Music Videos, but they also introduced the song title, artist and record company during the beginning of video. They also concentrate a bit more on bands playing instruments.
  • English Music Videos - English music videos have the tendency in some videos to have the singer sing while acting in the story.

What new skills were introduced?

I was introduced to the program, Final Cut Pro as I used it edit my video. The program was a new experience to me because of its professional level. Thus, the new skill of using such a high-level video editing software was introduced to me. In the past, iMovie and Adobe Premiere Elements were the two primary video editing softwares that I had used, but they were somewhat mediocre, making them relatively easy to learn and use but severely limited the number of functions available, and thus the effects and quality. Final Cut Pro involves new skills in the way that things are now more complex because of how effects are applied, the number of effects, number of tools etc. I found it very difficult to learn because of its complexity, but the skill of using this type of software began to be learned due to close proximity and experimental usage.
What did I find difficult and how was it solved?
I found the experimental learning of Final Cut Pro quite difficult because of the advanced level and the expansion of the simpler functions in civilian level video editing software as opposed to the professional variety. Because I was unfamiliar, the editing of the video became quite difficult. However, as with everything, I have to start somewhere so I just went ahead with it and learned the basic functionality of the software allowing me to edit the video despite the fact that it wasn't particularly good. This was how I solved it, if it can be called that. I experimented and learned some of it which allowed me to get somewhere though it was too short to allow me to run in the Olympics.
Evaluation
How can I improve my skills?

As said before, the difficulty lay in the usage of Final Cut Pro. Therefore, this would the skill I would like to improve. How can I do this? It is easy. Since it is another level from simple video editing software, I would have to learn more than just simple and basic functions such as cutting and cropping, but also learn how to use advanced effect customization, custom title creation etc. This can all be accomplished by learning through online tutorials and watching example videos from the internet. These usually provide a good source of learning. By learning it online, I can amass reasonably good skill in using the program.

What problems were there? How were they solved?
The first in a long line of problems during filming was the venue/setting. We agreed that we wanted to do it in the dance studio because it was the only setting available that had a real household-like setting because it had lights, wooden tiles, sofas and a TV - classic living room. However, there presented another problem - stairs. We needed stairs for one of the scenes and it needed to at the very least match the living room to maintain continuity. To solve that problem, we filmed the stairs area on the library, careful to maintain aspects of continuity to ensure it was a careful shift, disguising the boundaries. More problems arose during the filming. Even though frequent re-shoots were expected, people kept cracking up due to expressions. This was a very difficult to solve because people just could not concentrate and there was no way to force it. So we just shot and shot until we got it correct. However, a better solution might've been to switch people around to have better expressions thereby reducing laughter, or further segmenting scenes so that sections could be done at a time while not cracking up. Timing was also rushed.
How can I further develop the skills I have learnt?
Though there weren't very many film skills practiced today, rather drama skills, continuity, setting and concentration has to be further develop. For continuity, one must take into account the setting in order to find a suitable venue in which to shoot. That means, if there are stairs and a living room, we had to pick somewhere that included both. Or at the very least, maintain multiple similar aspects in order to maintain continuity. Venue also has to be well planned, not just to maintain continuity, but to also accurately visualize the scene. Concentration is something that is not learnt, but developed, and in order to further develop this point, one must actually focus very hard on the important tasks, rather than shifting focus. This is, however, reasonably difficult.
Evaluation
How successful was my performance / workshop and why? How could my group and I work more efficiently?

Though I hate being modest, I was pretty well focused, while my other group members failed to concentrate enough, and frequently broke up. However, the fault was mine when I did very little to help, and this means I need to cooperate with my team better, in the way that I have to do a bit more accommodation and assisting. The filming itself was reasonably successful, because we managed to finish the filming and upload all the clips onto final cut pro. However, time was a bit tight and we rushed it a bit. The cooperation and concentration was a bit lacking. I think that planning the various steps could have led to a better organized, and therefore more efficient set up.In terms of cooperation and concentration, we should do more to assist and help each other get back on task rather than doing little to get back on track.

Reflection:
What new information has been introduced?
Previously, because I had not taken film, so I did not know much of the terminology.

I learned about the different distance shots, ranging from the extreme long shot, through to the extreme close-up distance, as demonstrated in the above slideshow. I also learned about the various camera angles, such as the birds-eye view, the high and low angles, or the dutch angle, as followed below.

This terminology will help in the future, as it is important in the entire film unit. Film is based around cameras, and I need to know what the names of the shots mean. By using this terminology in the future in film, I can enhance my learning.
Evaluation
How can I improve my knowledge?
Since I had not previously taken film, I need to increase my own film knowledge. Aside from the distance and angle terminology, there are others such as the camera movement terminology. I can do look up more information in film books and personal research as it would help me in the future, especially in the unit, upping by marks, knowledge and other areas in regards to film.

Reflection: 2/11/11

Reflection
Continuing on from last class, we continued on the Health and Social Education film. We finished the script and started working on the storyboard.
What have I learned?
This is my first time being in a film course, which means that I learned quite a bit following the classes about film. Today in particular, I learned how in film the script specifically reflects onto the storyboard in the way that the latter is derived from the former. Using the script, a storyboard was formed by a series of photographed images depicting the scene and various camera angles, which will obviously be included in the actual film itself. I also learned that while in other courses, we used simple drawings, in film, the most efficient method of getting a representation of the envisioned film is through the direct photography of a single frame representing a segment per change in the film, following the script as a frame of reference. In regards to the writing of the script, I learned that unlike the story based drama, film is more in the moment. While drama is the performance of a story, film is a capturing of the story which means only the present matters, which means that instead of creating a background for the 'story', the film script leads on from directly what happens before and after.
Were there any problems? How were they solved?
There wasn't many problems in regards with the script writing , as it was simply a continuation of the understanding from last class which means that all we needed to do was lead on and follow the format provided. The real problem came with the storyboard photography. In order to visualize the vision of the film through photographed representative frames, one must, in addition, take into account camera angles that allow everything to be clearly seen, the location and action which must compliment the script itself in the way that it provides a reasonable estimate of the what the scene should look like. This means we couldn't just film anywhere, we had to film somewhere that closely resembled the scene, which was an initial problem since the places with household-like items like a sofa were occupied by other classes. This led us to conclude that the outdoors were the only option which were not akin to the script, so we eventually decided on the library which was open. In regards to actual photography, we had to take into account unforeseen circumstances that were not ideal to film or photograph such as coming out of the room, so we stripped off some of these parts. Also, ensured that the camera angles, images shown, action, and setting were aligned with said script, creating a successive series of images that accurately depicted the scene.
Evaluation
How can I improve my knowledge and skills?
Following this session, I learned how to create storyboard's images. However, I felt that they were a bit mediocre because they were only average and not so inclusive of the various professional aspects that should be taken into account. In order to better this aspect of my learning, I need to in essence research this by looking up model photos as well as film shots within films similar to the conditions of our script. Using the IB learner profile in the previous post, I can use the aspects of the film of inspiration and include these things into my own thereby creating an inspired, model and improved storyboard and film.
How successful was the workshop today and why?
I feel that today's lesson was highly successful. Because of our efficient collaborative efforts and brainstorming in the previous class, we had laid the groundwork for the next parts pretty well, which means we were suitably adapted to today. We efficiently finished our short script, and proceeded to quickly storyboard out script through photography. These images were easily uploaded and distributed to each team member. Following this succession, the groundwork for next class was well set. In order to portray this success, if one takes a look at the other groups in the class, one would find several of them still arguing over the idea and script they were still writing, which relative to us was quite slow and behind because were already in the next stage, already ready to move onto the next stage for the next class.

How can one become a better IB learner through film?

There are 10 qualities expected of all IB learners. Through exploring these qualities in film, one can be a better IB learner. How?
1. Inquirers - Inquiry is curiosity. How does one work with curiosity in film? The answer is simple. Since film is all about art and inspiration, curiosity is the exploration of these things. To be a better inquirer, the student must learn to develop the curiosity to explore the world of film, to find the art, and incorporate it into ones own work, creating a personalized product.
2. Knowledgeable - To be knowledgeable is to be intelligent in the way that students are aware of the significance each fact possesses. Film wise, a knowledgeable student is one that is mindful of the film techniques, various degrees of the art and the wide range of ideas that make up films, understanding the significance, forming a deep understanding of the subjects and skills.
3. Thinkers - In film, imagination to create the script is important. Film students must be creative thinkers to help them formulate a story for their creations, as this is what art is basically about: the creation from imagination. Also, one must understand the basis and problems within film and make creative decisions that make up a storyline.
4. Communicators - Film is a collaborative creative effort, which requires the ability to report ideas that will piece together a work of art. In order to become a better student in this area through film, a student will learn to communicate the ideas one has to a group in collaboration.
5. Principled - As mentioned before, film is a collaborative art. In a group, each individual must respect each member within the group. When this is practiced, a student develops the basic values of trust and loyalty, and from this film collaboration becomes a better IB learner in this area.
6. Open-minded - When creating a film, a film maker must always be open to new permutations and ideas. Also, in a group of discussion, a student must be willing to listen to other people's views and perspectives, understanding their side and contributing to the whole. By practicing these things like opening oneself to other ideas and other individual's thoughts, the student becomes a better IB student.
7. Caring - An IB learner must be able to understand the feelings of the ones he/she works with. Also, films are permanent entities that sometimes may offend the audience, which means in addition to the close proximity of colleagues, an IB film student must take into account the feelings of the individuals of the future who will watch the film.
8. Risk Takers - In the creative world, decisions are always to be made, and sometimes decisions to which something should be included or not, or whether this is an appropriate thing or not to part of the film. Sometimes, the decision may not be clear. Therefore, an IB student must be able to risk decisions that may or may not be right.
9. Balanced - An IB student must know the importance of balanced well-being. Though this isn't a particular quality associated with the IB film profile, a film student must know the importance of balance in a film, knowing that a film should not lean toward one technique, but use a variety to form.
10. Reflective - Reflection is a natural part to everything. In film, the student creates a work of art, although each film will always have some overseen flaws. The student must reflect on the errors of that work and learn from ones mistakes and become a better student for the next film where the film becomes better than before.
